How the hell are we already half way through September? Is it just me or is this year going by way too quickly?!? Oh well, since another week has somehow been and gone it means that it is time for another book review! And this week it is all about Artemis by Andy Weir. Let’s do this.
I did not like this book. I just didn’t. this was my second attempt at reading it and I don’t like it. which is such a shame as this was one of my most highly anticipated releases of last year!
I just found this story to be incredibly dull and predictable. Nothing that happened in this story took me by surprise. And it felt like nothing happened in the story at all. I found it really difficult to actually stay engaged with the story since I found it so boring. I kept getting distracted and zoning out while listening to this audiobook (tried physically reading it the first time around and couldn’t make it past the third chapter). It just completely failed at holding my attention and interested.
I think my problem with this book is that it was trying too hard. Just, way too hard. It was trying too hard to be suspenseful, too hard to be funny, too hard to be full of high stakes drama. And it ended up failing at being any of those things. It ended up just being dull and flat. It felt like Weir was trying too hard to replicate The Martian instead of just letting this be its own story. and I think that this is why I disliked it so much.
I also didn’t like the characters. for the exact same reason. They were all trying too hard to be relatable and funny. To just be. And they ended up feeling very two dimensional because of that I by the end of this book I wanted to punch about half of them.
I am so disappointed by this book. I wanted to love it, I really did. I even gave it a second chance after DNFing it the first time around, but it was no good. I just don’t like this book
