Book Review: The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

Hey Guys!

Its September! How I that possible! I swear only last week we were in March! Is it just me or is this year going by really, really quickly! Oh well, at least we are nearly into autumn :D. and since it is Saturday that means that it is time for a book review. this week it is all about The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken. Let’s do this!

I’m not actually sure how I feel about this book. I loved parts of it but found other parts a bit boring. I also spent the first quarter of it being very confused. So I can’t actually pinpoint how I feel about it…

I mean, for the most part I liked the storylines, although I do kind of feel that this book should have ended a bit sooner. Around the 350/400-page mark. With the events that happened around that section I feel like it felt like the start of the next part of the story, if that made sense. But I did like it. It is a different dystopian to what I have read before. It kind of reminded me of a cross between The Young Elite, The Immortal Rules and Divergent. Certain elements jumped out at me the whole time I was reading that just reminded me of one of these other series. particularly the whole traveling part reminded me of The Immortal Rules. I kept expecting Jackal to suddenly appear. But for the most part the story was pretty original and interesting.

My main issue with it was the first 100% page or so. It just felt a bit rushed and underdeveloped. It was a bit like Bracken was trying a bit too hard to kick start the story and it meant that it was very hard to connect with at the beginning. It took me a good couple of hundred pages to actually start to get into this book and enjoy it. it also took me that long to actually get my head around what was happening. Because it was so rushed, it was a lot harder to follow then it needed to be. thankfully it did slow down a bit in the middle, which I appreciated and that made it a lot easier to enjoy.

I also have issue with the characters. nothing major I just felt like there was a bit too much insta-friendship and insta-love in their bonding. It was just a little bit too quick and it meant that at times their connection to each other didn’t feel all that genuine. It just felt a bit forced because of how quick it was. which is a shame because I really liked the group together and I liked their dynamic, I just wish that it had been a bit more natural and not so forced.

Overall I did enjoy this book and I will 100% be continuing with the series and seeing where it goes. I am hoping that most of my issues with this book are just teething problems.

star 3.53.5 out of 5
