Book Review: City Of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

Hey Guys!

It is time for another book review and this week it is for a brand new release book! Whoop, whoop! And this book is also one of most highly anticipated releases of 2018! I am, of course, talking about City Of Ghosts y Victoria Schwab! Let’s do this!

This book did not disappoint! I really enjoyed it! I didn’t love it as much as other Schwab books that I have read, but I still really liked it! I don’t know why this book has been getting such a mixed reaction online…

I thought that this story was really interesting! I have read a few middle grade ghost related books in the last couple of years but this was unlike any of them. There is, clearly, a very complex world to this story. I was surprised by how much there was to this story. it went into a lot more detail then I was expecting, and I really liked that. I liked that there was that complexity and that level of detail to the story. It made it really interesting to read. I am fascinated by this story and why things are the way that they are. I want to know more about this world.

And I love that it is set in Edinburgh! Not many big books are set in the UK, and even fewer are set in Scotland. It was just nice to see. And you can really tell how much Schwab loves the city. There is so much attention to detail in this story. so much of Edinburgh’s history slipped into the story. It isn’t just a back drop to the story, it is a part of it, and that is brilliant. I am assuming that the next book (which Schwab has confirmed there is going to be) will be set in another city that Schwab loves, and I hope she does that city justice too.

I also really liked the characters. I thought Cassidy was a brilliant character. She is somehow both exactly like any other 12-year-old but also not at all. She has a normality about her which makes her really easy to connect with. I will admit that she doesn’t read as 12. To me she felt more like maybe 15 or 16. She definitely felt older then she was meant to. personally, I didn’t mind this too much as it made it a bit easier for me to connect to her, but I can see that this could be off putting to some people. The same went for Joseph and Lara. They felt older then there were.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book. it is sweet and funny but also dark and mysterious. It is just a really good little middle grade, I really don’t know why it is getting such mixed reviews. I liked it
