Welcome to yet another book review! this week I am finishing one of the first trilogies that I started reading this year, The Selection (and yes, I am only reading the original trilogy, not the companion sequals). So, without further a do, here is my review for The One by Kiera Cass.
I have mixed feelings about this trilogy. I really loved the first book, much more than I was expecting too but I was kind of disapinted by both the second and third books. its not that the sequals were bad, they just wernt anywhere near as good as the first book.
I found the sotrylines in this third book to be a bit tiresome and repeative and generally a bit played out. It felt like this book was trying to cram too many storyline into 300 pages and not doing any of them well. it just wasn’t at all original. What I loved about the first book was how genuine the romance felt and how it a much more political story then I was expecting it to be, but in the both the sequals the romance took a bit of a back seat to unnessaray drama. I particuarly felt like this was the case with the last third of the final book. it all just felt really unnneded and like there was dram for the sake of drama.
I also had issues with the charaters as the trilogy progressed. None of them felt like the same characters that we started with, and not in a good way. I felt like most of the character traits that we learnt about America in book one were contradicted in the later books. and the same seemed to happen to Maxim. Even Celest! I just didn’t feel like any character had any personal growth or progression but they did have complete personality swaps that made them all a lot more unlikable and honestly made me want to slap them at several points.
The only reason that this trilogy has managed to hold me at all is because I went into it expecting it to me a light and fluffy romance with no depth to it. I expected it to be shallow and unoringal. The first book took me by surprise but the later ones where what I was expecting it to be in the first place.
2.5 out of 5
