It’s time for my May first impressions post! Whoop, whoop! And this month it is for a nail varnish! Shock horror! Who would have thought it! Today it is all about Essie, so let’s do this!
Believe it or not, I have never tried an Essie nail varnish before. I have always thought that they were a bit overpriced for what they are. and I will be honest, I do still think that. I don’t like paying more than £4 for nail varnish. Why would I pay £7.99 for a nail varnish that get mixed reviews when I could pay £3 for a Barry M one that is guaranteed to be brilliant? but anyway, I digress. A couple of weeks ago Superdrug had a 3 for 2 offer on all their makeup, at the time I needed foundation and mascara so I decided to order a nail varnish as well and take advantage of the offer. And I decided since I both the other items where £7.99 that I would choose a £7.99 nail varnish to really get my money’s worth (yes, I am that person lol), and so Essie it was.
I chose the shade ‘Not Just A Pretty Face’ since I have been kind of loving really natural, softer colour nail varnishes lately, as opposed to my usual blacks and greys. And the first thing that I will say is that this colour isn’t what I was expecting. Online it looked more brown toned and slightly darker. In reality it is pink toned and quiet light. I have worn this two different ways since buying it and I can 100% say that the second way is better. I have worn it like I normally would with two layers and also just with one. Two looks weird. I think it would look amazing with a darker skin tone, but on me it just looks slightly odd. But, just one layer is quiet nice. It just adds a kind of glow to your nails and makes them look really healthy and nice. I will only wear this varnish this way from now on.
I will say that I am not a big fan of the consistency of this nail varnish. It is a very watery formula. Which makes it pretty difficult to get an even layer on each nail. It is just a bit strange. I wasn’t expecting this to be as watery and thin as it is. And it means that the varnish, even with to coats, is very transparent. You can see any blemishes on the nail through the colour. That being said once it is on it dries at okay speed. Not the fastest drying nail varnish I have ever used, but definitely not the slowest either. And it doesn’t chip very easily. Even with just one coat it wears pretty well. It was a good 3 or 4 days after application that it started to chip, which for me is pretty good, I normally chip on day 2 (I have a hands on job). Although I did find that the colour seemed to wear away on the nail tip after just a day. Not chip, just wear off.
I think all in all, it is okay. I am not a big fan of the consistency and I don’t think that it is worth £8. It didn’t feel like a higher end varnish. I was expecting this to feel like an OPI or Leighton Denny nail varnish and it really didn’t. I doubt that I will buy another Essie shade, unless there is a colour that I can’t resist. It is alright, but I still think Barry M is a much better choice. What is your opinion on Essie? Holy grail or over hyped? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon.
