Book Review: How To Stop Time by Matt Haig

Hey Guys!

Its Sunday! And it is Mother’s Day here in the UK, so I am going to make this quick and then go and spend some time with my Mum. So, todays book review is for How To Stop Time by Matt Haig, let’s go!

I am not sure how I feel about this book. I have been wanting to read it ever since I first saw it when it had just been released. But I have ended up being a bit underwhelmed by it.

Generally speaking, I enjoyed the general plot. I loved the concept of the story, these ageless people living through hundreds and hundreds of years. And for the most part, I liked the way in which the story was written. I liked that we got to see Tom’s life, the flashbacks. It was really fascinating to see what Tom had experienced up until that point, what has shaped him and haunts him. but the thing that I didn’t like about this book is that it felt as if nothing happened.

The whole time it felt like the story was just getting started. That it was setting the scene and opening the story. but it never really felt like it got going. I don’t know what it was about it, but it was just so god damn slow. And it was also incredibly predictable. I figured out every single plot twist super early on. i mean some of them where just so obvious. I knew what the ultimate outcome of the book was going to be by about 50 pages in. it was just a bit meh.

And the same went for the characters. I didn’t really connect with anyone, not even Tom. The lack of story just really hindered my ability to really feel for the characters. which is a shame since I feel like I could have really connected with Tom, if he had had more of a story. which is such a stupid thing to have to say considering he is over 400 years old and has an incredibly complex story.

Overall I was just a bit disappointed with this book. It was a decent enough read, but it wasn’t great and I did seriously underwhelm me. I just wish something had actually happened in the book.

And there we go. It is such a shame that I didn’t love this book more. I kept holding on hope that I would suddenly really connect with the story, but I just didn’t. have you read How To Stop Time? Did you have a better experience with it then I did? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon.

  1. I did enjoy the book a little more than you seemed to. I think you have to see the flashbacks as the story, rather than as ‘setting the scene’. But I liked your review – you make some good points.
