Welcome to my first reads post of 2018! Just in case you are new and don’t know what this is, essentially this is a series of recommendation posts, with each post being about a certain topic or genre of book. Today I thought that I would do a very general topic of just the general Adult Genre. If you saw my 2018 bookish goals post you will know that it is my goal to read at least one book per month from the adult genre, so to motivate myself a bit I thought that I would talk about some that I have already read form the genre and loved. So, let’s do this.
Wilde Like Me by Louise Pentland
When you read this book, you will fall in love with Robin Wilde. This brilliant debut follows 20 something, single mum Robin over a year of her life. You see her deal with everything from mummy issues to dating and the book even touches on elements of mild depression. This book is sweet and funny, daring and brilliant. It has highs and lows and many funny moments. I read this in just two days, it was such a good book and I cannot wait for the next one. It is the perfect summer read.
A Darker Shade Of Magic Trilogy by V E Schwabb
This is one of my all-time favourite trilogies. This multi-verse trilogy puts a whole new spin on the magical universe. It is fast paced and dark, sexy and funny, and full of incredible characters. You follow a magician called Kell as he finds himself on a deadly adventure with an unlikely ally in the form of a young cut-throat called Lila. You cannot help but love this trilogy. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. This is one of the best magic based stories that I have read in a long time.
The Martian by Andy Weir
I don’t generally read sci-fi books, but after several people recommended it to me, I decided to give it a go and honestly this book is incredible. It is funny and dramatic and honestly brilliant. Set on Mars you follow astronaut Mark Watney as he struggles to survive on the planet and find a way home. This book is honestly hilarious, which is not something you would think upon hearing what it is about, but it really is. It opens with the line ‘Well, I’m pretty much fucked’ which sums up the feel of this book perfectly. And the audiobook for this is brilliant. It is read by R C Bray, who does a brilliant job. He really brought the story to life and drew me into it. I cannot think of a better voice for Mark. I will admit that there is one moment in the book which doesn’t work particularly well as an audiobook, but the rest of the book is perfect.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
This is a beautiful story about magic and love. Once you start this book, you wont want to put it down. The main story follows Celia and Marco, two magicians that have been bound to complete against each other in a game of magic. You follow them as they help to create ‘Le Cirque Des Reves’, a magical circus that will fill your dreams, compete and fall in love. With beautiful writing, intriguing storylines and stunning characters, this is a book that you cant help but fall in love with. You will want to read it in one sitting.
Vicious by V E Schwab
What makes a villain? Read this book and find out. this story follows Victor and Eli, as they try to uncover the secrets of EO’s (extra ordinaries). This is a story about friendship and betrayal, good and evil, heroes and villains. This book has serious X-Men vibes. It boasts complex characters, a storyline that you have to slowly unravel and a completely unique plot. This is the perfect book to sink your teeth into during that autumn time.
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
I cannot even begin to describe the sheer range of emotions that I have for this book. I simultaneously loved and hated it. Moyes’ is an incredible author. The way in which she writes just feels so realistic that you find yourself being dragged into the story. This is why this book is so painful to read. You feel as if you are there, living it all. ‘Me Before You’ is such a heartbreaking story, about loss and love. Moyes’ characters are so lifelike that it is almost frightening. I know I say this quite a lot, but everybody should read this book. Yes it is harrowing and heartbreaking, and I cried my way through it, but it has such a poignant message to hit. Such a staggering plot. I loved it. And know you would too. If you are only going to read one book this year, make it ‘Me Before You’.
And there we have it. Those are a few books from the adult genre that I have read and loved. I have a lot of this genre on my TBR at the moment that I am really excited for so, hopefully, in a few months I will have a whole new list of adult books that I love. what is your favourite book from this genre? I hope that you have enjoyed today’s post and I will see you all again very soon.
