Book Review: Lockwood & Co: The Empty Grave by Jonathan Stroud

Hey Guys!

Happy Saturday! It is time for another spooky book review! Today I am finishing a spooky series that I adore. I am of course talking about Lockwood & Co by Jonathan Stroud. So without further ado, here is my review for The Empty Grave.

That was the perfect end to this series. Although I am sad to see it go. I love these books and this book just rounded off the series in the best way possible. It tied together all the storylines, getting to the ultimate battle and wrapping everything up. I loved it.

I was so worried going into this book that Stroud would finish the series by killing someone off. I had completely convinced myself that that was what was going to happen in this book. I thought either Lucy or Lockwood, probably Lockwood, would get killed and I would be completely heart broken. I am so glad that my prediction was wrong, although I am kind of glad I had it. it added this extra element of fear to the story as I was reading it. added to the suspense a bit.

But I am really happy and satisfied with how the story concluded in this book. Everything that has been building over the previous four books all came to a head. We were thrown straight into the action from the first page and it didn’t stop. In previous books we have gotten moments of rest bite dotted throughout the story where you got to kind of just sit and catch your breath, but this wasn’t the case with this book. It was non-stop. Just one thing after another. And this worked brilliantly. I loved how fast paced and intense it was. It showed the character’s desperation, the need to get to the answers, and quickly. It was just perfect.

I also really liked how dark basically all of the storylines where in this one. Throughout the series there have always been some very dark moments, but some of the storylines in this final book took it to a whole new level. And I really liked that. it had the feel of these teenagers truly becoming adults and glimpsing the world as the dark place that it truly is. They shed the last of their childhood in this book. And I feel like that was the perfect thing to happen in this final book. It rounded off the whole series.

This also goes for the characters. They have all grown and changed so much since the first book. Each and every one has truly developed as a character. Lucy has gone from being this insecure, slightly timid girl, to being this truly kick ass young woman. She is smart and brave and so willing to care. And then there is Lockwood. At the start of this series he was so lost. His whole world revolved around his grief, but now he has finally started to move on and he is opening himself up again. George is still George, but even he has gained confidence in himself. I’ve even grown to like Quill Kipps. But what I love most if how we have seen this group developed as friendship unit. I love how well they all know each other know, how much they love each other. I love that they have opened their group up to others. That Quill, Holly and Flo have been integrated into it. I am just so in love with this group. I also love the little hints at future romances for these characters.

Overall I loved this final book. It may be favourite in the series. It was just the perfect way to end. It was action packed, fast paced and drama filled, but also full of love and friendships. This series had everything I wanted from it and more. I never expected to love these books as much as I did.

star 55 out of 5

And there we go. And I am so sad that this series is over. I want more! this is such an underrated series that really does deserve more recognition. Have you read these books yet? What did you think about them? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon.
