Book Review: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Hey Guys!

Whoop whoop! Its finally Saturday. My god this week dragged. Anyway, it is time for a book review, and this week I am starting a new series. The series in question is The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater. So, without further ado, here is my review for The Raven Boys.

I am pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. I really wasn’t expecting much. I red Stiefvater’s Wolves Of Mercy Falls trilogy back in the day (liked it at the time, in retrospect, it really wasn’t good), so I didn’t have particularly high expectations of Stiefvater. But boy was I wrong to underestimate her. This book was nothing like her previous work.

I love this world. It is very strange and a bit confusing but also complex and really interesting. I am very intrigued by this world that Stiefvater is creating. considering that this book is set in our world, and is focusing on things that are believed to exist in our world, the way Stiefvater has written it makes it simultaneously feel like our world, but also feel like a new place entirely…If that makes sense. Her writing in this book is just almost lyrical and it really helps to bring the story to life.

And I really enjoyed the story. Considering in her previous works the storyline always felt underdeveloped to me, it did not in this book. The storyline felt very complete. You could see that Stiefvater has clearly considered all possibilities and weaved together multiple storylines into the main arc. It is so different from her other work, such an improvement. Due to the fact that both the storyline and world felt more fleshed out the whole book was far more enjoyable. The story really drew you in and kept your attention. Once I got into this book, I whizzed through it. I didn’t want to put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next.

I also really liked the character. Everyone felt very three dimensional and real. Each character was very individual with their own complex history and nature. I am really interested to see how each person grows and changes throughout this series. Already we have seen the characters start to grow into themselves and start to discover who they really are. I love that each character in this story is so different from each other. It makes it really easy to connect with each person and each personality. Blue is different Adam who is different from Noah who is different for Ronan who is different from Gansey who is different from Blue and you get the idea. And the fact that they are all so different really works. It makes their group feel that much more real and relatable.

Overall I did really enjoy this book. I am already looking forward to picking up the next book. I will however offer a warning, if you decided to listen to this on audiobook, be warned, you will need to speed it up, a lot. I usually listen to audiobooks on 1.2 max, I had to have this on 1.3. the nature has a very slow, monotonous voice. I had to listen to the first 2 hours of this book twice, because his just washes over you. I honestly had no idea what had happened up to that point and had to start again. (I brought this as a mp3 file, not an Audible book or anything so I couldn’t easily change the speed). And I know others have had similar issues with this audiobook. But besides that, the actual story is brilliant. Yes, you can figure out one of the major plot twists very easily, but, for the first book in a series, this is very good.

star 44 out of 5

And there we have it. have you read this book yet? What did you think about it? did you listen to the audiobook? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon.
