Book Review: The Son Of Neptune by Rick Riordan

Hey Guys!

Happy Saturday! Can you believe we are this far through august already?!? Oh well. It is time for another book review and this week I am continuing the Heroes Of Olympus series by Rick Riordan. So, without further ado, here is my review for the Son Of Neptune.

My god I love this universe. It is just so good. And this book was brilliant. One of the best Riordan’s that I have read so far. It was just so good. It had that good old Percy Jackson feel to it but it also felt new and fresh. I am really liking the way Riordan is doing this series. The whole, learning with them, thing. It just works so well. I feel like if there wasn’t the whole learning about the new side of the world aspect in this book, it would be very confusing. But having Jason in the first book and Percy in this one both discovering the world with you, it made it a lot easier to keep up with what is what and who is who and the different names for the same people and so on. I just personally think that the way Riordan has done these first two books is perfect. (sorry about being vague, trying to avoid spoilers).

I feel like with each book that is written within this universe, the darker it becomes. This book had some very dark ideas in it, which worked really well, but is reminding me a lot of the Potter books, how as the story progresses and moves away from childhood, it gets darker. The same thing seems to be happening in this universe (although not to such an extent). As an older reader I am really liking this. It is keeping the story very much alive and gripping. I am really interested to see how all of this is going to play out in the end.

That being said, these books are still very much middle grade and are hilarious. Although I am finding that there is more and more adult humour slipping into the books. Riordan is a master at slipping the funny into really dramatic moments. It is just amazing. I have never not laughed at one of his books.

I think the main reason why I am loving this series so much is because of the characters in it. not only are we getting to know a lot of new of new characters, but we are learning more about existing ones. When I first went into this series I was worried that it was just going to feel like Percy Jackson, with a few new people shoved into the mix, but it doesn’t. each new character is so three dimensional and fleshed out. And everyone is so diverse. in every sense. There are so many backgrounds in this series. And everyone has their own backstory, that we are getting to learn. It is just perfectly done. The perfect balance of the old and the new.

I cannot see my waiting long to pick up the next book in this series. I really enjoyed this one.

star 4.54.5 out of 5

And there we have it. have you read this series yet? What did you think about it? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon.
