Worst Book To Film Adaptations

Hey Guys!

Last month I made a post about what are, in my opinion, some of the best Book To Film adaptions around, of those that I have seen. In that post I mentioned that this was going to be a sort of series I am going to do, so toady I am going to be talking about the Worst book to film adaptations. Obviously, these are just my opinions, and I am not trying to insult anyone if one of these films happens to be one you love. Disclaimer over. Lets do this.

Percy Jackson And The Lighting Thief by Rick Riordan

I feel like this is one that is universally agreed on by the entire fandom. This film was shit. It actually worries me that they managed to get it just so wrong. The book, in fact the entire series, is incredible and I love it, but this film was just so bad. They took the basic story of the book and took out basically everything, except the very basics of the story and then added in a load of random stuff that made no sense. And to make it worse they changed so many things, some big, some small, that would clearly piss off fans of the books, for instance, Annabeth’s hair. Everyone knew what a fuss we kick up about Harry eyes not being green in the Potter films, why did they think that we would be okay with Annabeth not being blonde. This film is just laughable, and the second one is no better.

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

unpopular opinion coming up, I like Twilight. Always have done, always will do. I read the series back to back, fell in love with it and have read it several times since. I don’t care. I know its not particularity well written, or original, I know the characters are kind of flat and boring, I know it is full of tropes and blah, but you know what, there is just something about those books. There is a reason so many people have read them. But I personally believe that a lot of the hate about these books stems from the terrible movie franchise. These films seem to have just taken all of the bad from the books and amplified it ten fold. The characters in the films where even worsely written then in the book, the acting was kind of terrible, they cut all of the good out and I don’t know, they just weren’t good. They where just many grabs.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

I really recently read this book and fell in love with it. I thought that it was brilliant, such a good book, and then I saw that the movie adaption was on Netflix and I made the mistake of watching it. I didn’t even make it all the way through. I gave up it was so bad. Everything about it was terrible. Yes, they vaguely stuck to the story, but they didn’t do it well. None of the actors felt write for the roles, which then meant that there didn’t feel like there was any chemistry there. The filming was god awful, you can see the cameraman trip at one point, and that made the final cut! I just, I cannot even explain to you the many many things wrong with this film.

City Of Bones by Cassandra Clare

I am so angry about this bloody film. I knew that a lot of people disliked it but I didn’t watch it until a few weeks ago and now I completely understand why. It changed everything from the book and spoilt a load of things that happen later on in the series Also, I have no idea what they did to the characters. Izzy and Alec look nothing like they are supposed to, and don’t even get my started on Valentine. Then there is the question as to why is Magnus not wearing pants?!? I am just honestly so angry about this film. I think that if you haven’t read the books, and don’t plan to, then it isn’t too bad, but for anyone that has read the books, it is really not very good and I am so mad at it.

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

I read this book when it had just come out and at the time, I remember thinking it was kind of weird and confusing, but I really liked it. Didn’t think it needed a whole series, but I liked it. Flash forward to 2017 and I finally saw the movie adaptation of it and I am so annoyed at it. I can see why people hate this film. Everything about it was wrong. The actors looked nothing the characters, the storyline was vastly different, especially towards the end, lots of things weren’t explained. It just wasn’t good. And don’t even get me started on the terrible accents. I was angry at this film from the first line of dialogue If you take anything from this post, take this advice, do not watch this film. Especially if you have read the book.

And that’s it. Those are, in my opinion, some of the worst book to movie adaptations around at the moment. Please do not take offence if your favourite film was on this list, these are all my personal opinions, my opinion in no way discredits yours. Are there any that you think should have been on this list? Any good ones that I should watch to restore my faith in film-makers?Let me know if you would like a part 2. I hope that you have enjoyed this post and I will see you all again soon.

    1. I am yet to read Eragon (I actually ordered it a few days ago, currently waiting for it to arrive) but I have a feeling that once I have read it, I will suddenly be very angry at the film (saw it when it first came out) and need to make a part two of this lol x
